Personal profile


Louise is an applied design researcher and is responsible for leading entrepreneurship, enterprise and employability for the School of Art and Design, along with directing the new taught postgraduate programme Design for Business.

As a concept developer of Design for Business, funded by Scottish Government (as part of £15M national development project, 2010-12), Louise has experience of fashioning new relationships and working across the spectrum of Creative Industries to develop a vision for cultural and social transformation, enabling economic growth. During 2011-14, as a reviewer and selector for the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts – a £8M+ programme (run by Nesta, Art and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and national Art Councils - England, Scotland and Wales – she helped shape the development of innovation for Arts Businesses through collaboration to develop new business models and-or develop new audiences.

Louise has secured more than £4.5M to research as an author and co-author of grants. She has envisioned, edited and published two books, with 20+ international research outputs since January 2008. In 2017, she launched the new MSc Design for Business which builds on 18 years of networking with industry, design and craft leadership research, and postgraduate programming work, including ‘Capitalising on Creativity’ (St Andrews University) which synthesizes creative and management practice. Her former postdoctoral researcher, Dr Jen Ballie is now the Research Manager for the Design for Business programme at V&A Museum of Design Dundee.

Louise also holds external positions as Vice President of the European Academy of Design (EAD); Associate Editor of The Design Journal (published by Taylor & Francis); Peer Reviewer for the AHRC and, Board Member of the social enterprise, Along Came Kirsty. As EAD Vice President, she is bringing the international conference to Dundee in 2019.
