I am a Lecturer (Teaching & Research) within the Division of Education and Society, School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law. Prior to joining the University of Dundee, I worked in the School of Education at the University of Queensland, Australia. I studied and taught applied linguistics and TESOL education across three universities and in different countries including Australia, Bangladesh, and the UK. I hold an MA from the University of Essex and a PhD from the University of Queensland, English for human capital development in a globalising world: policy, perceptions and practices. I am also a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA).
I am interested in the intersectionality between language policy/education and political economy in the context of development. My recent works explored neoliberalisation and economisation of TESOL policy and pedagogy for human capital development in developing societies. These works contribute to understanding how language education policies in developing socities have been re-oriented towards human capital development policies in the context of neoliberal globalisation. I have interrogated how human capital development foci emphaised through language policy and TESOL translate into schooling practices and what implications such translation have for individuals in varied socioeconomic contexts. My works highlight how development agenda introduced within TESOL policy and curricula are predominantly guided by human capital theory which complements neoliberalism by promoting employment-orientation, skillisation, individualisation, subjectivities and affect. My works reveal how development foci constructed through human capital theory misrecognise larger social structures which contribute to exacerbating social inequalities. I draw on social theories (notably, Bourdieu's sociology) and critical applied linguistics to inform my analysis. Reflecting on the United Nations’ Sustainable Goals (SDGs), my aim is to contribute to understanding ways of ensuring inclusive and equitable policy and practices in education and society.
My works contribute to language, education, and society in relation to the interdisciplinary areas of language and political economy; language and education; language and development.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. My work contributes toward the following SDG(s):
ED51073: TESOL Curriculum and Instruction
ED51074: Critical Language Awareness and Practice in TESOL
PD50206: Dissertation
I welcome PhD supervision in the areas of applied linguistics and TESOL education. I am particularly interested in the areas of:
