Electrooptical engineer and computer scientist, Mario Ettore Giardini's research activity is on equipment for medical diagnostics in the community and in the field, portable clinical equipment, digital healthcare, and telemedicine, with the general aim of providing a pathway to healthcare equity and sustainability.

He is Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, UK and of the Royal Society of Biology, UK, and chairs the National Committee on Artificial Intelligence of the Italian Telemedicine Society.
