Biography

Matthew has a BA Hons in Archaeology from the University of York, a postgraduate diploma in Museum & Gallery Studies from the University of St Andrews and is a member of the Museums Association.

Prior to his post of Museum Curator here in Dundee, Matthew has filled various posts in the Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Scotland, East Lothian Museums, National Museums of Scotland and the St Andrews Preservation Trust Museum.

Matthew is responsible for the care, interpretation and accessibility of the University’s museum collections, which are used for learning and teaching within the University and for public engagement and wider impact locally and globally. He ensures that Museum Services plays an important role in transforming the University’s educational and cultural offer and helps to build its distinctive identity.

He is also actively involved in several organisations locally and nationally, including the University’s Culture & Arts Committee, the Abertay Historical Society, the Tayside Museums Forum, University Museums in Scotland (UMiS) and the Scottish Society for Art History.

Matthew’s research focuses on the history of art and science in Dundee, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He has curated numerous exhibitions and has organised several conferences including On Growth and Form 100 (in collaboration with the University of St Andrews, 2017), Scottish Art in the Great War (on behalf of Scottish Society for Art History, 2015) and Riddles of Form – Triennial conference of the International Association of Word & Image Studies (co-organiser, 2014).
