Biography

Niamh Nic Daeid is an award winning Chartered Chemist and authorised forensic chemist at the University of Dundee.  She is Professor of Forensic Science and Director of the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science (a 10year, £10million centre for disruptive research).  She also leads the development of Just Tech, an £15million Institute for Innovation for forensic science funded by the UK government as part of the Tay Cities Regional Deal.  She has been involved in forensic science education, training, research, policy making and casework for nearly 30 years.  

Niamh is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and holds fellowships of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Chartered Society of Forensic Science, the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland, the Royal Statistical Society and the UK Association of Fire Investigators.  She has worked on, and chaired, committees for INTERPOL, the International Criminal Court, the United Nations, the UK Home Office, the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes and the international forensic science community.  She promotes the use of high quality robust science to underpin the evidence presented in court and the strategic development of science communication skills for forensic scientists as they interface with other professional communities and the public. 

Niamh gives regular public and conference presentations and has received many awards including the Royal Society of Edinburgh senior medal for Public Engagement, the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes Distinguished Forensic Scientist award and the Peter Ganci award for services to fire investigation.
