Biography
Dr. Parminder Singh Reel is a Senior Research Software Engineer at the Health Informatics Centre, University of Dundee, based at Ninewells Hospital.
Currently, he is working on the EU-funded HT-Advance Project, developing a clinically relevant machine learning tool for diagnosing hypertension using clinical multi-omics data. His previous research contributions include:
- The MRC & EPSRC-funded PICTURES Project, which aimed to enable international research access to highly heterogeneous, routinely collected, linked clinical images. He was involved in exemplar proof-of-principle study that demonstrated use of machine learning (ML) for future dementia prediction applied to routinely acquired National Health Service (NHS) MRI brain scans.
- The EU-funded Horizon 2020 ENS@T-HT Project, focused on classifying hypertensive patients. In this role, he worked on multi-omics data integration and applied advanced machine learning methods to differentiate between endocrine hypertension subtypes. This project enabled him to lead several collaborative publications and patents.
Before joining the University of Dundee, Dr. Reel worked as an Assistant Professor at Thapar University, India. There, he established a Video and Image Processing Laboratory and secured government funding for multiple student-led STEM projects. Under his mentorship, student teams won the Golden Jubilee Project National Award from the Indian Defence R&D Organisation, with their work later showcased at the Lockheed Martin Center for Innovation in the USA.
Dr. Reel completed his Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering at Barkatullah University, India, where he received a national award for his final-year project. He was awarded the prestigious British Chevening Scholarship to pursue an MSc in Telecommunications and Information Systems at the University of Essex. Later, he secured the DLR-OU Chartered Scholarship to undertake a PhD in multimodal medical image registration at The Open University, Milton Keynes. During his doctoral studies, he was nominated for an international internship at the National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo, and also served as a visiting researcher at the German Aerospace Centre, Berlin. His PhD work earned him the IET Postgraduate Engineering Award.
