Biography

Pernille Spence is an artist, lecturer & researcher at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design.  She studied at Leith School of Art in Edinburgh before completing a BA(Hons) Degree in Fine Art Sculpture and a Post Graduate Diploma in Electronic Imaging at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. From 1999, Pernille undertook a Research Residency at DJCAD until 2004 when she was appointed as a lecturer & researcher in Time Based Art & Digital Film.

Pernille has been creating performances and moving image works since the mid 1990s.  She has created work for the sky, working with a team of skydivers, been lifted into the air by 22 giant weather balloons and devised a series of performances which took place in over 50 locations in the landscape alongside railway lines from Aberdeen to Glasgow.

Using a diverse mix of materials her work explores a visual dialogue between the human body, movement and space, with a focus on the body’s physical and psychological limits and constraints with in these parameters.

Exhibiting nationally and internationally her work has been shown in many galleries and festivals including the National Review of Live Art, Glasgow, the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art, Germany, the Australian Centre for Moving Image, Melbourne, Alchemy Film & Moving Image Festival, Scotland and she was recently part of “>>FFWD:Artists’ Moving Image from Scotland” in Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai Biennale, China. Her short film, Bob & Sink, made in collaboration with Zoë Irvine was shortlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2020.

Pernille is currently Programme Director for Fine Art and leads the Honours year programme in Contemporary Art Practice.
