Personal profile

Research

My research vision is to build evidence for transformative education that contributes to promoting socio-economic and environmental justice, equitable climate action, harmony with Nature and pro-environmental practices. My doctoral research focused on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in teacher education. Since 2015, I have studied environmental education and ESD pedagogies; relationship between critical thinking dispositions and environmental concerns; preservice teachers' agency to enact ESD; and preservice teachers’ conceptions of ESD.

My transdisciplinary research covers multiple sustainable development goals (SDGs) including quality education (SDG4); gender equality (SDG5); reduced inequalities (SDG10); responsible production and consumption; (SDG12); and climate action (SDG13). I am experienced in designing transformative research projects that aim at empowerment of marginalised groups, especially women. My publications (empirical as well as conceptual) push the field of sustainability education to rethink assumptions and pursue new opportunities. I use both qualitative and quantitative approaches to study different issues related to ESD, environmental education and social justice education.

Teaching

I am a Lecturer in Education (Teaching and Research) at the University of Dundee (UoD). I have extensive experience in teaching, mentoring, research supervision, developing new courses/ modules, undertaking programme review, formative and summative assessment, and external examination. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). I primarily teach on M.Ed programme and also contribute on MA ‘Learning for Sustainability’. I am module lead for M.Ed ‘Leadership and Organisational Development’. I had also been co-lead of the module on ‘International Education’. In addition to teaching, I am involved in supervision of Master and doctoral students.

Biography

I joined the UoD in February 2022. Here my main responsibilties are teaching, research and research supervision. I am also part of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Network of the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law, UoD. In my role as a Race Equality Representative in EDI Network, I lead on actions and initiatives within the school to drive forward UoD’s commitment to race equality.

Before joining the UoD, I worked in Pakistan for 20 years. Beginning my career as a school teacher in 1998, I started working as a teacher educator in 2004. In my role as a teacher educator, I developed and taught many courses related to education and leadership. I also performed various leadership roles (Head of the Department, Acting Rector, and Programme Lead) for a period of eleven years. I am experienced in working on large-scale (including multi-stakeholders) teachers’ capacity building, funded projects. Over the years, I have influenced thousands of in-service and preservice teachers and school leaders in Pakistan.
