Personal profile

Robin became a Lecturer in Social Work at Dundee in September 2020. Prior to this he was a Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Sheffield, where he now holds an honorary appointment as an Honorary Research Fellow. Robin's practice background was principally as a child and family social worker in Glasgow, he also has experience of community development work through voluntary activities. He is a qualified Practice Teacher in social work.

Robin is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an experienced lecturer and Advisor of Studies who has principally taught on social work qualifying and post-qualifying courses but also has some experience of teaching undergraduate sociology and social policy students at undergraduate level. His teaching this year will be focussed on the  BA Social Work modules Values (ID11001), Reading, Understanding and Applying Research (SW30010) and Relationship Building Skills (SW11011).

Robin's research focuses around issues connected to child and family social work, family support and social work education. Recent completed work has included research into the use of Family Group Conferences as part of a Restorative Practice model and the setting up of a free online magazine SW2020 Covid-19 during the height of the Covid crisis. He is about to start work on a BA/Leverhulme small grant funded project looking at the views and perspectives of care experienced people and frontline practitioners regarding changing safeguards for children in care in England. Robin is the co-editor of Practice: Social Work in Action journal with Dr. Wulf Livingston at Wrexham Glyndwr University. The journal has an explicit aim of encouraging submissions from newer writers (early career academics, practitioners and people with expertise by experience) as well as more established writers so Robin will be pleased to hear informally from anyone in those categories who may be considering submitting to the journal for the first time.
