Biography

Backgound

I was the Respiratory Specialist Nurse Team Leader for the secondary care respiratory service with a special interest in COPD and Asthma, also supporting the service for patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. I have held numerous posts in Tayside, mostly with a respiratory leaning. I have an interest in oxygen therapy, both acute and chronic and palliative care in COPD. I was also the Secretary for the Scottish Respiratory Nurse Forum, which I have been a member of since its inception. For a number of years I chaired for the Tayside Specialist Nurses forum. I had the role as Lead for Non-Medical Prescribers (NMP) for the acute service in NHS Tayside and represented the Nurse Director at the Scottish national NMP leads group.

Scottish Respiratory Nurse Forum (SRNF)– secretary – 2009 - 2014

SRNF committee member 2023 - ongoing

The SRNF is the Scottish National Group of Respiratory Nurse Specialists; it focuses on respiratory education, role development and engagement with the National Respiratory Advisory Group to lobby for priority care for patients with respiratory conditions.

National Non-Medical Prescribing Leads Group – 2015 to 2020

This group has representation from all the Health boards in terms of the governance of non-medical prescribing across Scotland and the UK

SCEPRN has representatives across the Higher Education Sector where nursing is provided as a pre-registration degree. It works with NHS Education for Scotland to provide oversight of the nursing programmes.

Current Role

I am currently head of studies for the pre-registration programme at the University of Dundee, School of Health Sciences. This role consists of strategic and high-level decision making to ensure the pre-registration programme aligns with the NMC educational requirements for pre-registration nursing as well as ensuring university standards are maintained and the journey of the students is a positive experience.

Reporting

At present I report to the Associate Dean of Education and Student Experience.

I liaise and work closely with the Associate Dean of Quality and Academic Standards to ensure the pre-registration programme is aligned to University Quality Standards.

Work closely with the Programme Manager and Professional Service Office Lead to create aligned processes and support for students.

Responsibilities include

Proactively work with Admissions Tutors to support the ongoing recruitment requirements and drive for the pre-registration programme. This includes the development of off campus promotional sessions to promote nursing as a career, the interview process and understanding of the admission process.

Lead and liaison with the Practice Learning Lead, to ensure the students receive a positive and quality practice journey. Lead on the development of processes that support this journey. This includes working with practice partners to support students in their journey.

Lead, the field leads to provide an innovative programme that stimulates the pre-registration student’s learning and engages students in developing their knowledge and skills as a nurse.

Lead year leads and work alongside the Senior Advisor of Studies for student support, who provide the ongoing support for the Advisor of Studies team, to support students to stay on programme. This year we have added a comprehensive onboarding programme for students in semester 1, year 1, to support the challenging transition onto the pre-registration programme. This work has been supported by the Senior Advisor of Studies. We have developed a supportive programme of learning for Advisor of Studies to develop confidence in the role, this has received positive feedback.

I contribute to the Non-Medical prescribing programme as part of my teaching remit as a module member. I contribute teaching where required to modules supplying respiratory expertise, knowledge and learning materials.
