I am a Hydro Nation Scholar and interdisciplinary PhD researcher at the University of Dundee, funded by the Scottish Government. The key objective of the Hydro Nation strategy is to develop the social, environmental and economic value of Scotland's water resources. My research contributes to this objective through its aim of better understanding how urban planning, placemaking, community participation and nature-based solutions can combine to deliver climate resilience and promote multiple benefits for people and the environment.
This module aims to develop specialist knowledge into the challenges presented in regenerating and sustainably managing historic urban places and demonstrates the constraints and opportunities encountered by the planner working within the historic environment. It provides an introduction to the principles which underpin contemporary urban conservation practice, and the statutory, procedural and executive responsibilities of local planning authorities.
This module investigates urban regeneration as a means of improving the social, cultural, physical and economic issues which an area may face. Specifically, the module explores how and why places may vary over time before looking at why regeneration activities may be needed. It also provides an introduction into how the qualities of a place may be evaluated and some of the strategies used in regeneration. The module concludes by looking into how successful regeneration has been and the factors which make a sustainable city.
My PhD research benefits from my professional expertise across a number of key areas including regeneration, economic development, spatial and environmental planning, heritage conservation, community development and engagement. Alongside my PhD, I also deliver undergraduate and postgraduate modules. This has involved module design, setting assessments, grading and providing feedback on work. I am also a member of the RTPIs Education and Lifelong Learning Committee.
I am interested in how placemaking, urban planning, community engagement and nature based solutions can combine to mitigate flood risk and increase climate resilience.
