Biography

Dr Sufyan Droubi is a Reader (Teaching and Research) in Law within the School of Social Sciences. He directs the LLM in International Commercial Law and the LLM in Law, Banking and Finance; his teaching covers modules in international law and in economic law and aims at strengthening students’ ability to critically engage with the topics which are the subject of their studies.  His research is particularly concerned with international organizations and non-state actors; and with the impact of international processes on sustainable development and on indigenous and other vulnerable peoples, notably in Latin America. His publications include International Organizations and Non-State Actors and the Formation of Customary International Law, which he co-edited with Prof Jean d’Aspremont (Manchester University Press 2020) and the monograph Resisting United Nations Security Council Resolutions (Routledge 2014). Previously, Sufyan was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of São Paulo and at the University of Manchester. He holds a PhD in Law from the University of Essex. He carried his previous studies in law at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. Fully qualified lawyer in Brazil since 1996, he has extensive practice in foreign direct investments and business law. He is one of the coordinators of the Interest Group on International Organisations of the European Society of International Law, and of the International Investments in Latin America Network, and remains a member of the Manchester International Law Centre at the University of Manchester.
