Biography

Tara Harper is a Lecturer in Education in the School of Education and Social Work.

She began her career as a secondary mathematics teacher in the Borders in 1992 and has also taught mathematics in Fife and Clackmannanshire. After a period of time working as a Mathematics Development Officer in Clackmannanshire, she re-trained as a primary teacher and has taught in the primary sector ever since. She has had a variety of roles including Class Teacher, Principal Teacher, Depute Head Teacher and latterly Head Teacher in Perth and Kinross. She joined the University as a permanent member of staff, teaching mathematics education on primary and secondary teacher education programmes in February 2015.

Tara completed her Masters in Professional Enquiry: School Leadership and Management in 2013 with the final dissertation titled 'Evaluating Professional Learning'. 

Research interests

  • Developing 'intriguing' learning and teaching in mathematics education
  • How primary and secondary colleagues can learn from one another and provide a progressive, coherent transition between primary and secondary mathematics and education
  • Co-operative learning in mathematics teaching
