Research
Yujia Huang, a lecturer at the University of Dundee, Scotland, leverages her extensive industry background and academic pursuits in design to adopt a systematic, transdisciplinary approach. Her focus lies in addressing individual, organisational, and societal challenges while driving innovation. Her expertise spans various domains, including Design Thinking Cross-disciplinary Applications, Design Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Omni-Channel Experience Design, and Socially Responsible Design.
Yujia authored the lead textbook "Design Thinking for New Business Contexts," which seamlessly integrates academic theory with contemporary industry practices and design thinking tasks. The book not only explores the evolution and applications of design thinking but also critically examines the role of design in driving business planning and innovation. Her publications also extend to brand management, design management, and experience design. Additionally, she serves as a regular guest author for the British Display Society's VM Spotlight Journal.
With experience as a principal investigator, Yujia led the British Council UK-China CtC grant project "Design for Heritage." This initiative brought together a diverse coalition of local academics, designers, experts, and students from Dundee (Scotland) and Changsha (China) to explore innovative methods for preserving and promoting regional heritage. Furthermore, Yujia is an active research member of several significant projects, including the AHRC UK-China Creative Industries Research and Innovation Hub project and the Five-year Major Art Project of the China National Social Science Fund Design Innovation and National Cultural Soft Power Construction Project.
In her roles as an international peer reviewer and track co-chair for esteemed academic platforms such as The Design Journal, as well as conferences including DRS, DMI, IASDR, EAD, and CUMULUS, Yujia plays an active role in fostering knowledge exchange globally. Her industry connections span China, the UK, and the US, ensuring the continual progress and dissemination of cutting-edge research in the field and amplifying the social and economic impact of her work.
Teaching
Yujia holds a Fellowship (FHEA) of the Higher Education Academy and spearheads the curriculum design for design thinking, design entrepreneurship, industrial design practices, and employability at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her guidance of design students involves empowering them to apply their design knowledge to tackle real-world business challenges and social issues. Yujia remains actively engaged in exam boards and programme reviews, ensuring continual refinement and enhancement of teaching practices.
Drawing upon her extensive research in design thinking, business innovation, and design entrepreneurship, Yujia has significantly shaped the content, structure, assignments, and assessment design of curricula. She emphasises effective engagement, adaptability, clarity, timely feedback, and rigorous assessments to uphold high-quality teaching standards.
Yujia advocates for a positive learning environment characterised by safety, support, inclusivity, and respect. She champions flexibility and innovation to accommodate individual learning needs, striving to foster an environment where students feel empowered to realise their full potential and excel.
