Yvonne Evans is Senior Lecturer and LLB Director, having joined the School of Law as a Lecturer in August 2013. She is a qualified solicitor. Having specialised in tax and trusts in practice, she teaches tax law honours (our most popular elective!), succession, trusts and aspects of family law.
Yvonne maintains strong links to the profession as a member of the Law Society of Scotland Trusts and Succession and Charity Law sub-committees, having served on the Tax sub-committee for nine years, and also the Society of Trust and Estate Practioners' Scotland branch committee.
Yvonne is Chair of the Law Society of Scotland’s Board of Examiners. She is also an External Examiner at Edinburgh Napier University and King’s College London on their tax law programme. She was previously an examiner for the Society of Estate Practitioners Trusts (Scotland) paper.
Yvonne is currently Vice Chair of the Scottish Fundraising Adjudication Panel, which deals with complaints about fundraising in Scotland.
Yvonne previously served as Senator at the University of Dundee and was appointed Student's Assessor, hearing appeals on matters such as discipline, plagiarism and appeals against termination of studies. She has a particular interest in widening participation and from 2017-2024, I was a trustee of the Lawscot Foundation.
Yvonne is particularly interested in tax law and trusts, and law reform. She has given evidence to Scottish Parliament and House of Lords committees, as well as the APPG on Inheritance and Intergenerational Fairness. In 2023, her proposal to add ESG investment powers to new trust legislation led to a new provision being added to the Trusts and Succession (Scotland) Act 2024.
In 2016, Yvonne completed the reissue of the Trusts, Trustees and Judicial Factors section of the Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia of the Laws of Scotland, and is currently updating this text. She regularly write about trusts and succession for Lexis, the Journal of the Law Society of Scotland, STEP and academic publications. She also regularly commentates during Scottish and UK Budgets and on tax news items for BBC and BBC Scotland television and radio.
