George Stephenson Medal

Prize: Prize (including medals and awards)

Description

The medal, presented annually since 1881, is one of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) most prestigious awards. This year, we secured the prize for our paper "Design and Use of Space in Refugee Camps: A Case Study of a Contested Terrain," published by the Urban Design and Planning Journal by Emerald Publishing. This paper explores how refugees in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency) camps – as people with no political identity, very limited political rights and with little certainty about where they will stay – engage in informal placemaking processes to improve the circumstances in which they are forced to live. The importance of this issue is made manifest by the growing number of refugees who find themselves in this position.
