Heerema – Developing a silent piling methodology – Collaborating with the University of Dundee to significantly reduce or eliminate underwater noise pollution from pile-driving operations. Heerema – Developing a silent piling methodology – Heerema Marine Contractors and the University of Dundee’s School of Science and Engineering have collaborated to significantly reduce or eliminate underwater noise pollution from pile-driving operations. Traditional operations, including for wind turbine installation and oil and gas facilities, generate considerable noise pollution. The direct hearing damage and disruption to communication and navigation signals that noise pollution causes in marine life can affect migratory patterns and cause long-term stress. Heerema’s solution to this challenge is a push-in pile design that replaces a single open tubular pile with a cluster of four smaller diameter open tubular piles. This eliminates noise pollution as it requires no pile-driving or hammering.
