Abstract
Condition or domain being studied
Dementia; Advance Care Planning; Advance directives
Dementia is a non-communicable disease affecting more than 55 million individuals globally. It results from changes to your brain from injuries or other diseases, and affects an individual's cognitive, mental and physical abilities to perform everyday tasks.
Rationale for the review
-Advance Care Planning (ACP) is an ongoing process that supports individuals to conceptualise, express and document their future care preferences that are reflective of their life goals and values. People with dementia are encouraged to engage with their ACPs early on while they still have mental capacity and before cognitive decline to ensure that familes, healthcare professionals involved are aware of their preferences of care. Still, people with dementia needs a customised ACP discussion process and interventions due to their symptoms of anxiety, forgetfulness and fluctuating mental capacity.
-The Thai dementia national guideline working group is revising the dementia national guideline. This rapid review is needed to inform stakeholders and the panel of experts in a timely manner. Findings will be a part of the national guideline, which is due to be revised by September 2025.
Review objectives
-What types of interventions or communication strategies that have been implemented to promote the uptake of advance care planning/advance directive with and for people with dementia?
-What is the effectiveness of these interventions or communication strategies regarding increasing advance care planning/advance directive uptake and what health-related outcomes have been measured?
