Abstract

Framed by the Rhodes Must Fall protests at the University of Cape Town in early 2015, this narrative essay examines the cultural misappropriation of Native Americans by Spur Steak Ranches, one of South Africa’s most prominent restaurant chains. By briefly examining some critical responses to Spur in literature and visual art, it also considers the ways in which oppressed peoples are misrepresented in South African popular culture, as well as the inconsistent reactions that critics and consumers have towards them.
