Abstract

The study is based on the analysis of visibility (quantitative representation) of national
minority and the representation of them and the qualitative context in which they are presented in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools in the Republic
Croatia, and whether they are harmonized with curriculum documents: national
curriculum and curricula of relevant subjects). Textbooks for
classes in the Croatian language, of the state education program, two each
the most represented textbooks for the subjects Croatian Language, Music Culture, Music
art, Fine culture, Fine art, Nature and society, History, Geography,
Ethics and Politics and Economy. Romani, Serbian, Italian and, to a lesser extent, Hungarian minority were analysed. The analysis indicates a general underrepresentation
of national minorities in textbooks, especially of specific persons, and it shows
tendency towards collective stereotypes often linked to the history of inter-ethnicity
conflict or subjugation), but also to positive examples in promoting interculturality and
multiperspective. In accordance with European practice, the study also makes recommendations for
government organizations, schools, publishers and the scientific community.
