Abstract
The first thing that strikes one looking at the paintings of Audrey Grant is their uncanny ability to convey tension. It is not so much a tension that is fraught with anxieties, although there are a fair few of those in some of her previous work of dancers and solitary figures. Here, it is rather a tension that comes from movement, agitation, and the opposition to rock-like stillness. In her paintings, there is a sense that there lies just beneath the surface a swell of powerful motion, only just held in place by a great effort of will.
