Between Stone and Sun: group exhibition, The Mill, Dundee

Research output: Non-textual formExhibition

Abstract

Exhibition dates: 20-28 June 2026
Venue: The Mill, Dundee, UK

Bringing together the artwork and ideas of 11 artists, this exhibition is a potent blend of material and formal processes. The group’s context was born from a desire to share conversations about our singular and mutualartistic imaginations; a way to put artworks out into the world on our own terms. Artists who want to let their making breathe in the spaces beyond their studios or as removed from the context of academia are very often at the mercy of large competitive opportunities where rejection is the more usual outcome. The Mill presented us with a characterful space brimming with its own historic identity, and a site for us to make new things, move existing things around and realise developing ideas.

The exhibition title is drawn from a collective approach lightly borrowed from renga, the Japanese form of collaborative poetry. Passing hidden folded words from artist to artist also evokes the Victorian parlour game, Exquisite Corpse. The final unfolded outcome is playful and unexpectedly apposite in terms of the eclecticism of the artists but in brick-lined happenstance, it reflects the particular qualities of the space. Its light lifting us and its stone grounding us and all the possibilities in between have been our shared context for making. - Dr Louise Ritchie
