Abstract

Build-a-Barley: The Phenotype Challenge is an interactive card game designed to help children and families explore the science of plant breeding, with an ideal age range of 10-12 years. Using illustrated cards that represent variations in root architecture, soil tillage, pesticide application, floral morphology, and seed morphology, players discover how these traits influence key performance categories such as strength, disease resistance, and competitive ability.

The game simulates the process of breeding by asking participants to make strategic choices about plant traits. Through play, they learn that breeding is not about finding a single “perfect” plant, but about balancing trade-offs to achieve stability and performance across different growing conditions.
