Abstract
The MRC PPU and University College London (UCL) UK Dementia Research Institute facilitated the first in a series of “Mindful conversations: black communities talk brain health & dementia” workshops together in London on 16 February 2026.
Partnering with the Community African Network, the event brought together 15 carers and friends of people with dementia, an Admiral Nurse, and community leaders, all from African and Caribbean backgrounds.
The group shared their insights and lived experience generously, and were delighted to test whether the MRC PPU Exchanges art card activity – originally co-developed for the Parkinson’s community – could be used to inspire deeper, more meaningful conversations about brain health, dementia and dementia research in their communities.
This report shares these lived experience insights, as well as the impact of the workshop and next steps for the project.
