N1 - 'Chess', a project which extended the research underlying the practice in terms of collaborative working, incorporation of digital processes within handworking, and more explicit engagement with folk narratives. Gatt, one of 84 makers invited to make a collaborative chess set which was then exhibited worldwide. Makers included: Peter Chang, Jack Cunningham, Maria Hanson, Dorothy Hogg and Bruce Metcalf. It was exhibited at Vennel Gallery (28 June - 28 July 2003), The Ruthin Craft Centre, Wales (15 November - 4 January 2004), The Crafts Council Shop at the V&A (4 February - 13 March 2004), Thomas Mann’s Gallery, New Orleans (1 - 31 May 2004) and other venues 2003 and 2005. The design for 'White Queen' derived from researching and developing ideas based on Scottish winter landscapes and Scottish folklore. Fine silver was photo-etched with Scottish stories which had been manipulated and abstracted using CAD. The metal was press-formed and fabricated to produce a 3D form which was filled with resin to give it extra weight. This is one of a number reflecting this new emphasis on practice-based research, and the work’s wider cultural impact. The evidence details related work undertaken for Evoke (Dundee Contemporary Arts) examining jewellery and digital media, and Wearer-Maker-Viewer (Scottish Gallery and Galerie Marzee, Nijmegen) exploring narrative themes from mythology. This phase of work was selected as part of the National Museum of Scotland’s ‘Celebrating Scotland’s Crafts’ exhibition which was shown at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC. BBC Worldwide selected Gatt to be one of 12 makers featured as ‘the best of British craft’ in the BBC Homes and Antiques Magazine. It is an explicit intention that the practice can be contextualised both in curated exhibitions and other research contexts, together with the wider international marketplace for handcrafted objects Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, Massachusetts, 12th Feburary - 3rd June 2005 Thomas Mann's Gallery I/O, New Orleans, 5th October - 15th November 2004 John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, 26th April - 1st August 2004 Crafts Council Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, 4th February - 13th March 2004 Gallery, Ruthin Craft Centre, Denbighshire, Wales, 15th November - 4th January 2004 Vennel Gallery, Irvine, 28th June - 28th July 2003 Velvet da Vinci Gallery, San Francisco, 1st - 31st May 2003
