Cilia and Flagella

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Cilia and flagella are microscopic hair-like organelles that protrude from the cell surface. This chapter describes the ultrastructure of motile cilia and flagella and solitary primary cilia. The description includes basal bodies, ciliary tips, and the core microtubular structure of the axoneme in health and disease. Differences in ciliary structure are discussed in relation to the diverse functions of cilia and flagella. Examples are given of atypical findings of ciliary ultrastructure due to inherited ciliopathies and more commonly acquired ciliary defects. The chapter focuses on ultrastructural changes in the inherited condition primary ciliary dyskinesia where transmission electron microscopy analysis is used to confirm a diagnosis.
