Abstract
Exhibition Venue: Spor Klübü, Berlin
Exhibition Dates: 29 November 2024
A one-night group show of 189 Berlin-based artists, that extended to include Aktionstag during the following weekend (07.12).
Close to the Edge’s press release makes comparisons with 1980’s decade of the Cold War, rise of neoliberalism and political uncertainty to global now. Concerns of re-elected US President Trump’s second term, European instability, potential War/ Cold War returns, and violent intimation question - will a 1980s revival be even closer to the edge?
Curated in the format of a salon hang the exhibition involves a mixture of predominantly wall mounted artworks and sound performances by "Axe" Catherine Lorent, and artist, curator and director of project space, Spor Klübü, Berlin, Matthias Mayer.
Invited British, Berlin-based artist, Alex Roberts presented Clown I, 2023 (40 x 30 cm pigment, oil and on polyester, curator selected). Fellow Berlin-based artists, curators and exhibition audiences critiqued the candid strength of Roberts’ painted probing of instability and unease via Clown I; matching the exhibition’s emphasising aims. Impacting for audience reflection, hoped for changes in views, action and or behaviour.
Aktiontag formed by Matthias Mayer’s extended the invitation, broadening the exhibition concept; highlighting solidarity in current political and financially precarious times. Aiming to create a follow up platform for exhibiting artists and wider audiences to further consult upon demonstrating actions underway as part of the outcry surrounding Berlin governments wish to approve 12% (130€m) in culture cuts. Resistance from within the sector involve many of the exhibiting artists in Close to the Edge, who participated in the opening protest marches. A City-wide campaign that begun during the day of the originating exhibition opening (29.11).
