Abstract

This exercise demonstrates how individuals need to consider using understandable non specialist terminology to aid understanding in communicating science. It also highlights how some commonly used terms and words may be misinterpreted by individuals depending on their context of understanding (e.g. protein or fatigue).

It is thought that use of technical terminology can impair people’s ability to comprehend and process information being presented.

You can do this exercise in pairs and so it can be used for larger or smaller groups. The estimated time taken for the exercise is 15 – 20 minutes including a debrief.
