Abstract
The paper is concerned with the use of component oriented design of distributed finite element analysis programs. Attention is focused on two particular aspects: (i) deployment of components; and (ii) overall program design. Three deployment strategies are examined: having identical code assemblies on all computers; using interfaces so that the component assemblies reside only on the servers; a hosting approach, where the component assemblies reside initially on the client and are transferred to the servers so that they can be run on the servers. With regard to overall program design, component orientation allows key areas of complexity, such as equation solution and mesh generation, to be isolated from each other.
