Confusione terminologica: “femminismo” ed “emancipazionismo” nell’Italia liberale

L’articolo esamina la terminologia impiegata nella storiografia sul movimento che lottava per i diritti delle donne nell’Italia liberale. In particolare, si interroga in merito a se debba essere descritto come un movimento femminista o emancipazionista. L’autrice analizza gli usi attuali e nel passato, indaga la storia e le origini della confusione terminologica intorno all’argomento e mette in luce alcune questioni, problematiche e insidie che emergono quando si cerca di venirne a capo. L’intento non è quello di dettare regole rigidamente prescrittive, ma piuttosto suggerire che forse è giunto il momento di discutere più a fondo una questione spinosa, una questione che nel corso del tempo potrebbe avere contribuito ad affievolire l’interesse suscitato da questo importante movimento tra chi studia la storia delle donne italiane.

This article discusses the terminology that historians have used to describe the movement that fought for women’s rights in Liberal Italy. In particular, it focuses on the question of whether it should be described as a feminist movement or an emancipationist one. It examines the current and past usage, traces the history and origins of the terminological confusion around this issue, and airs some of the issues, problems and pitfalls that arise when trying to resolve it. The author’s intention is not to be overly prescriptive but instead to suggest that it is perhaps time for more discussion of this thorny question, an issue that has, arguably, over time helped reduce the appeal of this important movement to historians of Italian women.
