I bid for, and won, the opportunity to make a new work COTIDAL that creatively researches our island status, in the light of sea water levels rising. COTIDAL looks to engage people in a meaningful ways with climate crisis challenges for communities living close to the coast. The project currently has attracted 20K Arts Council funding, which is a tiny % of its overall budget so over the last year and a half I have been able to produce the pilot film, which is 50 minutes in length and a fraction of the 24hour and 50minute film I am attempting to make.

The film is made up of User Generated Material made in answer to my question: What do you see when you see the sea? The content for the film has been collected in a range of methodologies: Social Media Campaigns, Locally facilitated workshops with targeted user groups, and content filmed by myself.

Over 100 contributions were supplied to the project in response to an open call, plus additional content generated in community workshops with a diverse range of people who would not typically have access to creative outlets. I have edited this content with my own filmed content, script and soundscape. The pilot COTIDAL film is embedded in the community around Appledore, North Devon, which is where the first Time and Tide Bell is installed, and where a range of community groups were engaged in the project’s evolution. For the film I have been supported by collaborator, the artist film maker Ben Wigley.

The Film was premiered as part of the Appledore Book Festival in September 2022. 90 people attended this event.

Online Screenings took place on October. Over 200 views joined the online screening.

The next screening will be at the Royal Maritime Museum Greenwich as part of World Ocean Day.
