Abstract

This guide introduces the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) - a framework designed to improve transparency, equity, and inclusivity in research recognition. By defining 14 standard contributor roles, CRediT allows research teams to acknowledge the full range of contributions beyond traditional authorship, including roles in data curation, project management, software development, and supervision.

Created by the Open Research & Publishing team at the University of Dundee, this practical resource helps researchers understand what CRediT is, why it matters, and how it can be applied across disciplines and project types. The guide includes real reflections from Dundee’s research community and offers advice on using CRediT in author lists, acknowledgements, research portals, and internal project tracking.
