    Abstract

    This special print issue of Variant was published in memory of former editor Leigh French, who died suddenly in May 2023. The publication brings together a wide range of artistic and critical contributions reflecting Leigh French’s long-standing influence on Variant and on independent cultural publishing.

    Contributors to the issue include artists and writers with long-running relationships to Leigh French and Variant, alongside others appearing in the magazine for the first time. Contributors include Jonathan Anderson, Dave Beech, Jon Blackwood, Neil Clements, Gair Dunlop, Communal Leisure, Jamie Cooper, Anthony Davies, Neil Gray, Michelle Hannah, Danny Hayward, Anthony Iles & Nick Thoburn, Nabila Irshaid, Shona Macnaughton, Mira Mattar, Chad McCail, Hussein Mitha, Benjamin Noys, Hardeep Pandhal, Paul Pieroni, Hannah Proctor, Joey Simons / Glasgow Housing Struggles Archive, Mike Small, Euan Sutherland, Bechaela Walker, and Abigail Webster.

    The cover of this commemorative issue was illustrated by Mick Peter. The publication was launched publicly prior to its wider distribution through cultural venues and its subsequent online release.

    Variant was an independent magazine with a commitment to critical engagement with cultural issues in their social and political contexts.
