In 2019 we were invited by the SSA and VAS to present a screening programme for the SSA+VAS Annual Exhibition 2019/20 at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. The programme comprised invited works from highly respected artists and work selected from an international open call. We received over 300 submissions from around the world and presented a screening programme with works from 22 countries. Through CutLog we are able to explore methods and techniques being used by artists creating moving image work today through the multiple technologies and software currently accessible. The films comprise a combination of conceptually led works to those where artists are experimenting with a particular aesthetic or innovative techniques. They range from mobile phone to 4k video, digitised 8 and 16mm film to computer-generated imagery covering subjects such as the natural world, human conflict and socio-political events. Some works make use of the written and spoken word, some harness the power of memory and fantasy whilst others explore issues around identity and/or the absurd. Over the duration of the exhibition there were approx. 34,000 visitors. CutLog held a very well attended event at the RSA, bringing together artist filmmakers from across Scotland and northern England to discuss issues concerning artists making work in this field and potential solutions for the future.
