    Abstract

This chapter provides a basic insight into civil liability for delict. It starts with a brief explanation of governing principles, before considering, in greater detail, the basic requirements that must be met for liability in negligence to arise. Damages and defences are also discussed in this section. There is then a brief explanation of vicarious liability, before going on to cover in outline liability for breach of statutory duty. Finally, the essential elements of a small selection of intentional delicts are outlined and explained.
