Abstract
Between 1994-6 a collaborative project in Denmark and the UK restored three lengths of degraded rivers, supported by EU LIFE funds and the country's leading bodies responsible for river management, environmental protection, planning and water treatment. The restoration project is a demonstration exercise, incorporating a wide range of techniques, supported by an unprecedented environmental monitoring program to determine the extent of benefits. The Skerne in Darlington, UK, is an example of integrated restoration of physical river structure with improvements to, and rationalization of, surface water sewer outfalls.
