N1 - Artwork explores the interplay between digital narrative, image and interaction and questions the limits and purpose of key conventions in games and hypermedia. This is done primarily by developing a confutational aesthetic i.e. one that both delineates and removes or obscures key paradigms such as the reliance on verbal text, back buttons, easy re-readings, and the expected goal orientated 'making a difference' tasks. Based on a piece of Scottish history from the Early Modern Period the artwork has no clear demarcation between the protagonist’s perceptions and exterior events. Artwork deconstructs the boundary between subjective perception and verifiable fact. To offset the immersive difficulties of such an aesthetic the project uses a 'fragital' mode, which the author has created to describe an uncommon pairing of the digital experience with the onscreen touch. This sense of a material and sensitive tangibility is located in the drawing, movement, composition, and responsive actions of the artwork. The visual aspect of the project's aesthetic is a hybrid of detailed line art, handcrafting, and popular imagery. Disseminated and reflected on by exhibition: Solo show The Lighthouse (October 8 – November 26 2004). Work has been reflected on within the papers: What is Interactivity? Presented at Flash in the Can conference (10th April 2005), and Will Internet Art Ever Grow Up? (July 2008) in Cross Media Communications: an Introduction to the Art of Creating Integrated Media Experiences. New York: Thomson Delmar Learning. (ISBN: 1418049247). Included in a key digital practice archive: Electronic Literature Organisation Collection (October 1 2006) and featured in The Iowa Review Web/University of Iowa (August 2007) dc.isbasedon: What is interactivity?
