Abstract
This chapter explores the challenge of managing place perception in the digital age through the lens of the Digital Identity concept (Bloom Consulting, 2020). The Digital Identity concept focuses on the need for places to strategically manage the information which appears in online searches that can influence place perception. A place’s reputation can be damaged if the top search results about the place are dominated by negative information or comment; dominant third-party narratives may need to be addressed if they perpetuate negative stereotypes about a place and thus prevent a more balanced and holistic image of the place to be formed. To this end, we develop an integrative framework that illustrates the influence of first-party content and third-party content on Digital Identity, thereby enabling places to better manage their Digital Identity.
