    Abstract

An annual group exhibition of research projects (outcomes and in-progress) showcasing the research community (staff and PhD researchers) across the School of Art & Design – Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. Curated by DJCAD's Baxter Fellow in Curatorial Practice, Judit Bodor.

Contributing artist, Alex Roberts presenting, two paintings, Clown I, 40 x 30 cm and Clown II, 35 x 44 cm, 2023 (wall mounted, pigment, oil and on polyester). The clown studies are part of a series of developing paintings labelled, Monkey Puzzles. A grouping of artworks that are continuing to be internationally selected for further exhibits e.g., Close to the Edge, Spor Klübü Berlin.  Paintings that investigate Alex’s material play and mindful application to pare back marks while observing body language from a run of collected encounters reviewing unease.

These smaller works provide an insight into extra studies that sit alongside her larger transformed, painted research. Artworks that seek to examine transient, chance meetings, experience; probing the instability and transparency of speculated portraits.

From the familiar to the unexpected the subjects expose an un-fixedness of witnessed, projected, and empathetic gestures. Exploring painted unease between what is public and what is private: how, in today’s digital world, appearance often contrasts with reality and sociability belies intimacy. Testing Alex’s relationships between ‘drawing through painting; painting through drawing’ as she observes and explores fragments of empathy and the periphery of memory.

Alex’s interests in exploring the spectacle and non-reveal of identity, often by capturing moments in the lives of others, invites the viewer to question their own perceptions, observations, and recollected encounters. Reviewing body language, hints of narrative, performativity and embodiment that equate with painting.

Other EXPO exhibits ranged drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, performance, video, audio work, online commissions, artists books, design objects, documentaries, research posters and academic publications.
