N2 - Door Drawings, a triptych, continues an investigation into interiors as an expanded practice through sculpture, installation and drawing shown in the 2023 DJCAD Research Expo between 27 Jan 2023 to 18 Feb 2023. Door Drawings offers a visual reinterpretation of research concepts outlined in the a conference paper presented at the Experiential Design: Rethinking Relations Between People, Objects & Environments Conference, Florida State University. Both the conference and drawing reconceptualises the door beyond its functional limits to acknowledge its role as a mediating device between private and public space suggesting, as Benjamin might, that the true face of the city is revealed not in its outer materiality but in ‘the sharp elevations of the city’s inner strongholds’. Door Drawings further develops these interrelationships to explore the door’s dual phenomena of outer / inner and its public / private characteristics, invoking what Aldo Van Eyck described as the ‘shape of the in-between’. This questions existing conventions of how doors are visually represented, and therefor interpreted as dimensional and functional minor elements within a larger architectural ensemble and as architectural objects which come into existence as drawings prior to becoming object. Whilst this offers factual "data" of a door as a drawing this reveals little of its richness or nuance as objects of identity, control, passage, and transition. Door Drawings continues an inquiry into the new term of “Dooring” as an expansive redefinition of the door and its relationship to the interior and the interior’s role in reading the city.  Media- Graphite on BFK Rives paper   The DJCAD Research Expo was curated by Dr Judit Bodar involving 50+ staff and PhD researchers.
