T1 - Draw It! Colour It! Creatures
A2 - Russell, Natalie
N1 - Commissioned illustration for a collaborative publication exploring drawing with contributions from 40 of the best loved children’s book illustrators, Chris Riddell, Axel Scheffler, Emily Gravett, Alexis Deacon, Yasmeen Ismail, David Roberts, Sara Ogilvie and Russell Ayto etc.
‘Draw it! Colour it! Creatures’ offers an imaginative and fun collection of creative prompts encouraging children to break free from restrictive colouring lines and patterns to create expressive designs of their own. The 120 pages are rich in variety and character - and not only serve as a creative springboard for the youthful mind but also provides the reader with an insight into varying drawing approaches of the artists involved and their preferred media of choice.
Although drawing is an everyday activity for personal sketchbook work and story composition - the challenge of this project was in the design of a simple black and white illustration for the publication. Having worked previously with a comprehensive colour palette – it felt unsettling leaving my drawn line bare without the comforting blankets of silkscreen printed colour and patterns.
This project highlighted the freedom and simplicity of drawing as an illustrative tool in contrast to the more complex, time consuming and expensive techniques previously employed to assemble books.
