Abstract
This paper seeks to integrate, unify and consequently analyse the efficiency consequences of recent empirical findings on the impact of unions. A dynamic model of on the job training is used to analyse the impact of unions on training outcomes, turnover, productivity, investment and profitability. The overall efficiency consequences are also studied. It is shown that moderate degrees of union power are efficiency enhancing despite reducing investment and profitability.
