Abstract

This paper introduces the findings of a first systematic literature review on the emerging scholarship on emotions and populism. In the context of the ‘emotional turn’ in populism research, the paper presents a critical review of peer review literature from 2017 to 2023, and explores how emotions are studied in empirical populism research. With a particular focus on negative, positive, and mixed emotions, the paper reflects on the intersections and different use of concepts and theories across disciplines, such as political science, psychology, and sociology. The paper draws particular attention to the concepts of affect and emotion to understand the role of religion and religious identification in populist forms of collective polarisation.
