title = "Expanded cinema and narrative: some reasons for a review of the avant-garde debates around narrativity",
keywords = "Cinema films, Avant-garde",
author = "Jackie Hatfield",
note = " dc.publisher: Millennium Film Workshop The main theoretical arguments within the historical avant-garde have circumvented the complexities of narrative experiment. The text proposed that research be undertaken to establish new critical discourses within the field that reflect the dramatic changes brought about through industrial production and technological innovation. For example paradigms tested in participatory cinema, incorporating representation, a temporal narrative and performance, have largely fallen outside the orthodoxies of the available critical histories and remain overlooked in the collective body of available research. The text charts a trajectory for moving image experiment with dramaturgy and moving image, and highlights some of the uncertainties in the critical histories around narrativity. Millennium Film Journal is a key referreed journal in the field of Experimental Film and Video, at the Millennium Film Workshop in New York, distributed in the US. Current philosophical and critical dialogue around this small field, is largely taking place in the US (Grahame Weinbren, Lev Manovich) and Australia (Jeffrey Shaw, Peter Weibel iCinema/ Future Cinema). There are few field-specific Journals in the UK, namely Frameworks. The focus of the research is British work concentrating on review of earlier theoretical dialogue, i.e. Laura Mulvey, Peter Gidal, Malcolm Le Grice, Christian Metz, etc and more current analyses i.e.Catherine Russell, Malcolm Le Grice etc The research leading to this text and subsequent research led to the successful application to the AHRC 'Narrative Exploration in Expanded Cinema' a £250,000 research grant.
