Farewell

Farewell is a collaborative project with Celestial Labs Ltd for Edinburgh Hogmanay organised by Underbelly Ltd. The initial plan for Edinburgh Hogmanay was to create a live drone show event in Edinburgh, but due to 2020 Covid restrictions, the possibility of showing an event live became unachievable. Instead, a plan was made to make a film featuring drones and drone footage of the highlands of Scotland and Edinburgh.

My role in the film was to create the animations that program the drones to fly. The visual creative plan was a team effort, involving a combination of working with a local artist Gary Wilson and Celestial Director John Hopkins. This output was the first opportunity to test some of the techniques that I had been developing, including interpreting drawings. We flew 144 drones simultaneously for each element of the film.

The results, three separate short films and a combined version, were released over the new year period on popular social media platforms.
