Finite element approximation of hyperbolic equations

    Abstract

    Finite elements of degree d are analysed for the semi-discrete periodic initial value problem for pure advection in 1D. We derive the dispersion relation for arbitrary degree and highlight the distinction between even and odd degree bases. The phase and group velocities are also analysed.
