Abstract
A performance lecture by Grace Ndiritu unpacking the ethos sufficing her practice to compose a reflective space through a shared meditative dialogue that reveals the urgent effects of the Capitalocene, and the transformative power of healing and collectivity.
The event was introduced and chaired by Sophia Yadong Hao and Prof. Sarah Perks.
Grace Ndiritu grounded the audience in the gallery space, inviting participants to gather on the floor and join a guided meditation before discussing her ethos and approach to her practice with exhibition co-curators Sophia Yadong Hao and Sarah Perks.
Ndiritu shared clips from her 2021 film Black Beauty (2021) and stills from Becoming Plant (2022) which features in the exhibition at Cooper Gallery. The conversation drew on Ndiritu’s long term project Healing the Museum and books Being Together: A Manual for Living (2021), Dissent Without Modification (2021); covering shamanic practices of healing, active listening and non-violent communication; collective practice; working with dancers and psychedelics with respect, seeking permissions from the dancers and mushrooms alike through active listening; and working with policy makers and museum staff on the processes of reparation of objects from colonial collections across Europe.
This event is presented as part of the CHEAD Annual Conference 2024 with support from the DJCAD Centenary Trust.
