note = "Hairwaves: A Cautionary Tale CD & HairwavesFM 87.7 8th December (2006) A sound art CD & one day FM radio event at CCA, Glasgow on the theme of hairdressing. The research basis for this project was to use a non-visual medium to examine something very visual and to explore the act of communication between client and hairdresser as a metaphor for other acts of visual/ non-visual communication. How do people communicate what they want to the hairdresser and in turn how do we communicate through hair as a society? A collaboration with Mark Stewart and visual designers, funded by the Arts & Business Creative Partnerships Scheme. The CD was created over an extended period (6 months spread over 2 years) with Freight Design. The methodology allowed for influence of the soundworks on the visual design process as they were being created, and vice-versa. The FM station was a way of reaching out to the people who participated in the recordings: Hairdressers and clients were the target audience but many others tuned in. When the recordings were being made, radios were continually on in the background so it was decided to use the medium for dissemination of the project. An open call was also made for work with hair as a theme and resulted in over 20 international participants.
