Epigenetics is currently an expanding field of biomedical research relating to changes in gene expression, phenotype and heredity as a result of external or environmental factors. As resident artist for EpiGeneSys European Network of Excellence, an EU funded FP7 initiative, I am engaged in research that explores the visualization of Epigenetics and particularly the integration of Epigenetics and Systems Biology. This activity is a constituent element of the work package 9 – Science & Society through which I am currently finalizing a series of artworks and collaborations towards exhibition and publication.Adopting the metaphor of Epigenetic Landscapes, as first suggested by CH Waddington in 1942 as a model for navigating complex systems, I am working with network scientists and other practitioners to develop contemporary visual interpretations and models of this concept. Initial investigations have been presented at the Network Annual Conference as proof of concept and a pilot exhibition has been presented at EINA Gallery Barcelona. The full exhibition will be held at the Cite International des Arts in Paris in May 2015. Selected elements will then be exhibited in various network locations throughout Europe. An initial funding allocation of 10,000 euros (FEC) has recently been allocated towards this production. To date, this research has also formed the basis for a series of PhD workshop on Epigenetics (‘Epigenetic Imagin(in)g’) at the Institute Curie, a conference paper (‘Exploring a Landscape’) at the International Association of Word and Image Conference, (August 2014). It has also had a direct bearing on my invitation to be a co-investigator (Arts & Public Engagement Projects Leader) on the Personal Genome Project (PGP UK) led by Prof Stephan Beck (UCL, London) and participation as guest speaker (paper presentation – ‘Art, Science and Visual Thinking’ and panelist for conference summary) at the EU COST Event titled: Bridging the Gap between Science and Art (Brisciart), Ancona, May 2014.
