Abstract
This article summarises key messages from the Healthy Planet session at the 2025 RTPI Scotland Annual Conference. It outlines the Balance project—an approach designed to quantify carbon emissions and sequestration potential at a local scale to support net‑zero planning. The article discusses Angus Council’s work on climate‑aligned Local Development Plans, emphasising the importance of nature‑based carbon removal, biodiversity enhancement, spatial quality, and climate resilience. It also highlights University of Dundee research led by Professor Husam AlWaer, identifying optimal urban density (50–80 dwellings per hectare) to enable viable local living, reduce car dependency, and support sustainable, climate‑resilient communities.
